Location
Location: the north-west of Twente, the Netherlands.
Surface area: some 10,000 ha.
Number of inhabitants: about 24,000.
Accessibility is excellent: the community is situated along the A1 Motorway and its rail links bring you to Utrecht, Enschede, Almelo, and Zwolle.
The municipality consists of two villages, Wierden and Enter, and a few hamlets. Both villages have the most important facilities such as: schools, swimming pools, sports halls and -fields, churches, libraries, tennis courts and a riding school.
Landscape
The municipality has a varied countryside. First of all there is the agricultural landscape typical of Twente, with woods, wooded banks and characteristic - often very old - farmhouses. Then there are nature reserves, like the "Wierdense Veld" (400 ha. of peat land) and the "Mokkelengoor" (marsh).
Shopping
All your daily shopping can be done in the village centres of Wierden and Enter. Both Enter and Wierden have weekly markets. Enter's combined residential and shopping centre has preserved its character of an old village street. The centre of Wierden was completely renovated a few years ago and is still being developed further.
Activities
The municipality has a great number of sports clubs for almost any type of exercise. Of course Wierden has its cultural events, too. There are quite a few societies, and moreover a Cultural Board, regularly organising activities.
Accomodation: hotels, camp-sites or holiday resorts
Visitors can go cycling; do walks; or visit the Clog Museum, the Museum of Antiquities "Buisjan" or the Zomp Museum (a "zomp" is a flatboat typical of the region), all three of which can be found in Enter.
Those keen on water sports can go canoeing on the Twente Canal or the river Regge; swim in the indoor swimming-pools of Wierden and Enter; or visit "De Lageveld", a recreation area with possibilities for swimming and windsurfing. During the summer season a traditional Enter zomp sails up and down the river Regge. Its helmsman will be happy to take you aboard.
Also popular is the subtropical swimming-pool in Wierden with its whirlpools, sauna and Turkish bath.
For your refreshments and meals you will find a variety of restaurants (ranging from exclusive and select to low-cost); take-aways; cafés and pubs.
Trading estates
In both Wierden and Enter there are trading estates that accommodate mainly companies that are local in scope. Larger companies are usually established at the "Business Park North-West Twente", which borders on the municipality of Wierden.
